Naan bread!

I have had direct experience on many occasions to say that Kids LOVE working with bread dough!

Naan bread is a delicious, quick cooking Indian flat bread that makes a delicious accompaniment to a bowl of my coconut dahl.  Working with this dough, Kids will learn the fine motor skills involved in using a rolling pin and touching the dough will keep them engaged. Eventually they will become intrigued by how adding flour keeps the dough from sticking to the counter and rolling pin!

Naan bread can be served as an afternoon snack with cucumber, carrots and/or apples. It makes a delicious accompaniment for dinner with Coconut dahl and rice!  When making any bread or meal it’s always important to be very well prepared.  Here are some tips…

  1. Make the dough the day before.

  2. Include your kids in this step as well.  It’s easy, fun and supports them to understand the full process.

  3. When you are ready to roll the dough and cook you will need the following equipment/ingredients:

    • 10–inch frying pan

    • Rolling pin

    • Tongs

    • Oil (4 Tablespoons for frying)

    • Flour (2 Tablespoons for dusting)

    • Stool or chair so your child is comfortable at counter height

    • Aprons

    • Wet cloth (for wiping hands)

Let your child flour the rolling surface, roll out the dough and pass you the dough to fry.  Cook for 2 minutes in an oiled cast iron pan, flip and cook for another 2 minutes.

Enjoy while warm.  Kids enjoy this from start to finish!  Yum!

Have fun!
